Our vacation journal - eggs, giraffes and the diggiest dame!

Dear Addie and John,

We left grandpa and Mimi's house around 9:00 pm last night. John was pretty much asleep by the time we got to state route 13. We drove all night and the both of you slept real well! And to top it off you both woke up wonderfully in Norfolk, VA. We planned to go to the Virginia Zoo today since our condo is a little over an hour away and we can't get into in until after 4:00. We wanted to stop somewhere for breakfast, but couldn't find anything. We found a fire station and asked a nice fireman...and off we were to a local favorite called D'Egg! It was yummy...and you had pancakes with cream! What else?

We then walked around the Norfolk Bay and saw mermaids! Norfolk's mascot is the mermaid - it is on every sign and there are statues everywhere! Before going to the zoo (we needed to wait for it to open), we went to the Lafayette Park Children's Playground!

We then went to the zoo! And being Columbus Zoo members has its advantages even in Virginia, as we got in for half price! We saw lots of animals and had a good couple of hours roaming around. We saw peacocks, zebras, lions, red river hogs, giraffes (even a baby!), ostriches, elephants, foxes, meerkats, turtles, gibbons, bears, tapirs, gorillas, a tiger, buffalo, and a bald eagle! It was all in all a great morning...now onto the BEACH!

Both of you were asleep in the an within 5 minutes of leaving the zoo. So, we stopped at Firehouse Subs and bought a couple of subs instead of stopping at another local restaurant. And you both slept all the way until Curratuck, NC.

We arrived at our condo at Colony by the Sea and were thankful to see our one away from home. Addie, you were so excited to see the beach. We unpacked the van and put away our belongings and the groceries we bought. After dinner, we headed down to the beach...

John, you clung with what looked like a death grip on daddy's shirt. But to my wondering eyes surprise, Addie you asked to take off your crocs and get and on your feet. This was just so different from our last visit to the beach, when you were John's age. And even more amazing to me, you starting digging in the sand. Do you remember the book, The Diggiest Dog? Well, that is who you became...digging small holes all over the beach! We even met a part pit bull named Buster who was giving for crabs! He even found one while we were watching! Addie thought it was interesting how the dog ate the crab!
Addie's first feel of sand in her hands!
John checking out the waves, clinging to daddy!

The diggiest dog and the diggiest girl!

I can't wait to build sand castles with both of you tomorrow! But now for some sleep!
